Recordings

“The Society of Saint Gregory should be a source of pride and encouragement to every traditional Catholic. Anyone faced with the question: ‘Why the Tridentine Mass?’ should reply by playing a Saint Gregory Society recording.” — Michael Davies, President of the International Una Voce Federation

The recordings of the Saint Gregory Society encompass the whole Mass with Epistle, Gospel, Preface, Pater Noster, and every antiphon and collect. A beautifully produced booklet contains the entire Mass in Latin and English, with very informative explanations of the Liturgy and the music.

Palestrina's Missa Sacerdos et Pontifex
$16.00

The Saint Gregory Society has produced the music for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The CD was recorded and is presented in thanksgiving for the pontificate of our Holy Father Benedict XVI and the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum which went into effect on the Feast of the Holy Cross, 2007. The Mass setting is Palestrina’s ravishing and seldom-recorded Missa Sacerdos et Pontifex, with two motets — Nos autem gloriari and O sacrum convivium — by the same composer, and the Gregorian Mass propers of the Feast of the Holy Cross. Recorded September 2007. A perfect gift for anyone who loves the Latin Mass and who wishes to commemorate this historic time in the Church.

CD: Solemn Mass of Easter Day
Palestrina's Missa Regina cali
$16.00

Music for this Queen of Feasts includes the Gregorian chant proper “Resurrexi” along with polyphony by the Italian master Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Motets by Verdelot and Gascogne are included as anthems sung during the offertory and communion, respectively.

Translation:

Solemn Mass of the Assumption

CD: Solemn Mass of the Assumption
CD: Solemn Mass of the Assumption
Victoria's Missa Gaudeamus
$16.00

Music for this beloved feast of the Assumption of Our Lady includes the Gregorian chant proper Gaudeamus omnes in Domino along with polyphony by the Spanish master Tomás Luis de Victoria. Victoria was very likely a student of the great Palestrina and later was ordained a priest. He wrote sacred music exclusively, and is famed for the mystical fervor of his style. Victoria’s Missa Gaudeamus, a brilliant six-voice setting of the ordinary of the Mass, is unforgettable for the grace with which the composer weaves the hauntingly beautiful initial motive of the Gaudeamus introit into the rich texture of the polyphony. Victoria’s motets Beata es, Virgo Maria, and O Sacrum Convivium are included as anthems sung during the offertory and communion, respectively.

“The men of the Schola Cantorum intone the chant magnificently. The full choir, nearly 30 voices in all, sings the polyphony with a clarity that doesn’t compromise grandeur. While it’s thrilling to hear and ensemble of this size sing the Sanctus of Victoria’s Mass, the ensemble is also excellent in the delicate motet ‘Beata es, Virgo Maria’. I strongly recommend this recording and suggest you seek out the Schola Cantorum’s other recordings of Renaissance polyphony.”

Votive Mass of St. Gregory the Great
$16.00

The Officers of the Saint Gregory Society present a live recording of the Solemn Votive Mass in Honor of Saint Gregory the Great that was celebrated on 12 November 2006 at Sacred Heart Church in New Haven on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Society.

To describe the effect of Liturgy as represented on this disc, we paraphrase an extract from a review of one of our recordings that appeared in 2001 in Una Voce France: “This recording reflects a great reverence in the interpretation of the gregorian proper chants and recitatives as well the polyphonic music of Lasso and Palestrina. By just listening one is enveloped in an atmosphere of prayer and of profound devotion. One easily imagines all that such music can inspire in its proper setting, in the unfolding of the liturgical action, in the joyous solemnity of the liturgical festival as actually experienced.”

An archival recording of an actual liturgical celebration inevitably includes many extraneous sounds, the Officers of the Society believe that many listeners nevertheless will appreciate having alonside our professional audio recordings this aural testimony to the living tradition of the classical Roman Liturgy. Digitally recorded in surround sound. Accompanying booklet includes complete text of the Liturgy.
